Garden Gallery: Los Gatos

So, I have this fun opportunity that a media specialist/video producer friend has presented to me. He’s a talented guy but his day job just isn’t feeding him creatively so he has approached me about maybe doing some videos on the side. I am not sure where we are going to go with this.  At the very least, I will have some clips that I will share here, but we are thinking (since he has done this type of thing before) that if it comes out interesting, we might pitch it to PBS or something.

But here is the thing….what exactly is ‘it’? We’ve had a couple beers to get discussions going, and I suspect we need to have a few more, but I am curious if any of you have any ideas.  We have lots, (so don’t worry if you don’t) but as I look around to see what others are doing in this (totally unfamiliar to me) realm, I see more of what I don’t want to do than what I do. It’s an interesting thing to think not just about content, but how to deliver it, and what is cool, new and special in garden design and also music, video-graphy, presentation, and style.   Its seems big and I am in uncharted territory…so any ideas or encouragement you might offer will be duly fawned over with the rest, as we dare to dream…..;)

This came across my desk this morning, and while this is not exactly like anything I am thinking about, I love it’s feel. Cool music, interesting shots, funky gardens; these get a thumbs up from me. It was created by Mitchell Maher (whose photography site is the bomb — go now, check it out — well, maybe after you watch this video).

Before & After: Artscape’s Staircase Garden

before and after garden makeover staircase garden

Whose back garden looks like this?  Kinda like the builders just left? Hillsides and walk out basements can be tough (and often expensive) but this garden tames the steps with sleek cable railings and while this surely is  not a budget design, it shows how to soften and pull together a hillside garden.  I think a key to big staircases in the garden is to minimize the underside, either make a feature of it, or obscure it because otherwise the steps take up too much visual interest and that’s really just not what most people want to see when they are sipping a gin a tonic in the shade, right?

Before & After: Deanna’s Curb Appeal

before and after curb appeal deanna garden design

I love it when  a bold move just works!!  And painting your house eggplant purple is certainly a bold move.   I wish I could tell from the pictures what the details are around the windows are, I think maybe a mosaic?  The grasses work so well too, with their touch of the purple, echoing the house color, YES!  don’t you agree?

Garden Gallery: West 8′s Iconic Mobius Garden

west 8 mobius garden pool

An Iconic house requires and iconic garden right?.  The famous Mobius house is surrounded by the Möbius garden which is a continuation of the play on lines (house designed by UN Studio).  The garden connects the house to the adjacent woods with snaking lines that turn and double back before diving in the thick undergrowth.

My favorite feature is the black bottom pool  that reflects the trees and the sky.  Similar to the pool, the glass of the house is meant to reflect the texture and color of the trees and the changing seasons.  While I am fairly sure I could not happily live in this cold seeming concrete home, I can certainly appreciate the interesting thoughts about reflection and lines on the landscape.

Garden Gallery: Future Green’s RE-cycled Garden

future green the recycled garden

Paint, Pallets (the trendy garden material of the moment), mirrors, and tin ceiling panels make up this clever industrial garden.  Future Green (of Brooklyn NY) put this recycled garden design together.  The oversize pallet tree boxes (click through to the gallery to see the detailed images of it’s construction) are a great way to fill a big space. (wouldn’t those be great on industrial sized castors?)

RE-Thinking Container Gardens

mini home garden

You know, most people think of something else when we talk about container gardening.  Made from living plants this creation by John Millman is an extraordinary work of craftsmanship and design.  I think every garden needs one! (especially mine)

Plant List:

moss from the side of a building

echeveria

hens&chicks

weeping rosemary

creeping thyme

a bonsai tree

dwarf mondo grass

kingsville boxwood

Combine creatively with black fine sand, rocks, little bamboo sticks, tiny pots, and a (hypertufa?) house.
