Before & After: A Charming Side Yard Makeover

This next transformation is probably one of my all-time favorites, partly because I love side yards but mostly because it’s just so gorgeous. Landscape Designer Shirley Bovshow came up with amazing side yard makeover a few years ago for a client living in Los Angeles. What used to be a narrow tunnel that wasn’t much more than a dusty walkway to the other side of the house quickly became a lovely oasis, filled with romantic charm.

Shirley designed this gorgeous space on-site and pulled in a few recycled materials give it a unique feel. The stepping stones are actually just pieces of salvaged concrete, but they look so much nicer than what comes to mind when you hear “recycled concrete” don’t they? She lined the path with lavender, ornamental grasses, tree roses, vines and elfin thyme, along with a few other perennials, and hung a small pendant light from the beautifully aged metal arch.  Oh, and she even managed to add a few fruit trees! You should head over to her blog and check out the rest of her transformation- it’s truly amazing! There are lots of great photos and I think you’ll be able to pull a few ideas away for yourself!  -erin

  1. Sometimes, I am so jealous of California gardeners! I have seen some lovely “do-over” side yard projects in California. I would love to see some great ones from New England.

  2. I agree Amy –always wishing there was more going on in our neck of the woods….there are some lovely gardens no doubt….but the overall level of interest in doing smaller but realy fabulous projects does seem lower. As a designer, and someone in the industry– I always try to think of ways to help change that.

Whipping Up Some Holiday Containers

Whipping Up Some Holiday Containers

After so many years of installing countless commercial and residential holiday containers, I could do it in my sleep. Things are Going To Be Messed Up

UPDATE: You can see it is taking shape — hope you like it so far….still working….but getting there!! A serious change up is in order around here and while it is happening, things are going to be a little off. I tend to do these things myself (I just like to have my fingers all…

A Tale of Improving Weather, Gardening and Anaphylactic Shock

The snow is piling up (over the windows at this point) and my cabin fever is turning into a strange and crazy thing. I think I might be developing photokeratitis. We’ve run out of firewood and the oversized roof-cicles are making me feel like I live in a cage. So it is no wonder that…

A Studio ‘g’ Holiday Shopping List

My wife asked me as we drove with our four kids from Maine to North Carolina, what I would like for Christmas. You know the feeling of not really wanting anything other than warmth, good company, good food, and a healthy, happy family. Well, I am having those feelings this holiday season but there are…
