Modern Landscape Masters: Brian Mackin: Counterbalance Sculpture

One of my personal design mantras is ‘go big’ and ‘design like you mean it’ – I mean really, don’t be wimpy.
Brian Mackin means it when he throws ceramic pots that are bigger than he is. Using his whole body, he shape pieces that fit into a kiln 9 ft long and 50 inches square. Used by great hotels, restaurants and retail outlets, his forms are in great demand for both indoors and outdoor garden and landscape applications.

  1. I love the counterbalance sculpture. It is beautiful. I have been looking for “something” for my backyard but after seeing that photo I am definitely inspired. Thank you for sharing.

  2. I can’t imagine what it would take to throw a pot that size. I really enjoyed throwing while I was in college, but haven’t kept up with it. Thank you for sharing these pictures, they are amazing, and inspiring.

A Tale of Improving Weather, Gardening and Anaphylactic Shock

The snow is piling up (over the windows at this point) and my cabin fever is turning into a strange and crazy thing. I think I might be developing photokeratitis. We’ve run out of firewood and the oversized roof-cicles are making me feel like I live in a cage. So it is no wonder that…

A Studio ‘g’ Holiday Shopping List

My wife asked me as we drove with our four kids from Maine to North Carolina, what I would like for Christmas. You know the feeling of not really wanting anything other than warmth, good company, good food, and a healthy, happy family. Well, I am having those feelings this holiday season but there are…
